Sharon Gannon

Sharon Gannon is a yoga master, author, animal activist, and artist with a commitment to yoga as a path for spiritual activism and activation. She is cocreator, with David Life, of the Jivamukti Yoga® method, which emphasizes vinyasa, scriptural study, devotion, prayer, music, chanting, and meditation, as well as animal rights, veganism, environmentalism, and political activism as paths to enlightenment. A student of Brahmananda Saraswati, Swami Nirmalananda, and Pattabhi Jois, Gannon brings a highly disciplined asana and meditation practice to her teaching.

As a poet, musician, dancer, singer, choreographer, and producer, Sharon Gannon has been involved in a number of artistic performances and collaborations, including the video Asana: Sacred Dance of the Yogi. She received critical acclaim for the CD Neti-Neti, and has appeared as a guest vocalist on CDs with Bill Laswell, Mike D., Sean Dinsmore, David Newman, Shyam Das, and DJ Cheb I Sabbah. She is featured in many films, books, and magazines, including the acclaimed documentary film, What is Yoga? and the book Yogini by Janice Gates.

Gannon is coauthor (with David Life) of Jivamukti YogaThe Art of Yoga, and Yoga Assists, as well as author of Yoga and Vegetarianism and Cats and Dogs are People Too. In addition to teaching the Yivamukti Yoga Method internationally, she is codirector of the Jivamukti Yoga Center in New York City.
