Celebrating Life, Love, & Peace

Registration for this workshop has ended. Go to the Search Workshops page to look for upcoming workshops.
Dance is more than a dynamic art form; it is a way to understand, communicate, and become aware of our shared human experience. It is a practical way to celebrate life, reach out to each other, and bring peace to our world.

Chuck Davis, renowned teacher and choreographer of traditional African dance, leads this lively 5-day workshop in which we study the rituals, culture, and lifestyle of African peoples through dance styles from Africa and the African Diaspora.

From warm-ups through choreography, we explore eight categories popular in African dance: warrior, maiden, acrobatic, elder, social, religious, puppetry, and masquerade. As we dance, we gain a deeper respect for ourself and our own ability as well as for cultures very different from our own.

Prepare to sweat, give thanks, and dance for peace, love, and respect.

Bring a full-size set of white sheets for costume making and a drum, if you have one.

Chuck Davis, affectionately called “Baba Chuck,” is founder and artistic director of the Chuck Davis Dance Company and the African American Dance Ensemble. For 49 years, he has traveled the world to study and teach dance and choreography.

Papa Malick Faye, master drummer and dance teacher, comes from a family of drummers in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. He is known for his mastery of the sabar drum, which he has been playing since the age of 2
