The decisions we make every day, as an individual, have a monumental effect on our community and the earth as a whole. Taking care in choosing what we eat, where we live, and how to preserve our precious resources, like water, can truly change our life and help us remember that we are all part of a greater whole.

It is estimated that we make more than 35,000 decisions every day, most of them about seemingly mundane things like what to eat or wear. But when you add the number of decisions together and multiply it by the number of people making the decisions, the power of our decisions to change things is limitless.

This weekend we hear a number of inspiring stories from visionaries who have brought change to their communities and beyond by making choices that preserve life’s essentials. Erin Brockovich, the woman responsible for winning the largest medical settlement in history against a company poisoning the water of an entire town, encourages us to stand up on behalf of our community. Majora Carter, president of MCG Consulting and host of the Peabody Award-winning public radio series, The Promised Land, talks about America’s “most expensive citizens” and climate-adaptation. Laurie David, producer of An Inconvenient Truth and author of The Family Dinner, talks about how to cut through the fog of modern living to recreate community. Josh Fox, filmmaker and director of Gasland, inspires us to take a stand to protect our precious resources. Frances Moore Lappé, author of Diet for a Small Planet and You Have the Power shares how to choose courage in a culture of fear. Bob Berkebile, founding principal of BNIM Architects, show us how architecture can foster holistic, integrated communities. Robert “Skip” Backus, Omega’s chief executive officer, and Carla Goldstein, Omega’s chief external affairs officer and director of the Women’s Institute at Omega, will cohost this second annual Design By Nature conference.

From supporting local food systems to protecting natural resources, together we learn how our everyday choices can truly change the world.
