African-American gospel music has a long and rich history of building strong communities. With the guidance of Sister Alice Martin, one of the most highly regarded gospel leaders today, we become a gospel music community, united in our love of the music.
We explore many avenues of gospel music, including Southern gospels, spirituals, hymns, jubilee quartets, calypso, songs of the Civil Rights movement, contemporary expressions, and anthems. We also learn the vocal technique inherent in each style.
Most of each session is spent simply singing. No previous experience is needed to learn and enjoy this heart-opening music that will be with you long after you return home.
An electrifying gospel singer, songwriter, and choir leader, Sister Alice Martin was the musical instructor for the late “Queen of Gospel,” Marion Williams, and her Marion Williams Singers. She is the pastor and founder of Voice of Praise Worldwide Ministries, and runs a youth and young adult mentor program with ex-offenders in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
