The Zen of Seeing

Art as a Path to Peace

Registration for this workshop has ended. Go to the Search Workshops page to look for upcoming workshops.

Based on the work of Frederick Franck, author of The Zen of Seeing: Seeing/Drawing as Meditation, this workshop offers a way to a peaceful life through the process of seeing/drawing.

By using the barest of materials—a pencil and white paper—and through meditation, guided imagery, and silent periods of drawing, artist Joanne Finkel helps us explore the difference between looking at objects and really seeing them. We begin each day with meditation, tapping into our “inscape” to find our inner peace. We start the workshop drawing simple items, like a leaf or an apple, and work our way up to drawing the human body.

“Looking separates us, seeing enables us to feel the oneness,” says Frederick Franck. As we learn to see the “unspoiled core” of everyone and everything, we rediscover the beauty in our world.

The Zen of Seeing retreat is open to anyone interested in a simple practice of concentration, meditation, and relaxation, including experienced artists and those who have not drawn since childhood.

Bring two drawing pads (good quality paper, 14x17 inches), a drawing board, pencils, and a kneadable eraser.

Joanne Finkel is an artist and clinical social worker. A student of Frederick Franck, she ran workshops with him until his death in 2006. She works with individuals using art, trauma, and traditional therapy at her private practice in Vermont.
