Judaism and Jewish identity can become a source of creative inspiration and spiritual guidance if we are willing to confront the pain and fear that are inextricably bound up with the legacy of being a Jew. While American Jews may feel no overt threat of anti-Semitic discrimination or violence, our unconscious fears still live in our bodies and psyches. Our internalized anti-Semitism can dominate and warp our very sense of self and our relationship to our Jewish identity, the Jewish community, Gentiles, Israel, and the world as a whole.
In this retreat, under the inspiring and healing leadership of Rabbis Jonathan Kligler and Miriam Margles, we learn how to become "creative actors rather than unaware reactors" to being Jewish. We spend an enlivening and enlightening week participating in lecture and discussion, interpersonal sharing, spiritual teaching from the Jewish tradition, visualization, creative movement, and singing.
With a new understanding of the internalized effects of anti-Semitism, we also explore relationships between Jewish men and women, the character of Jewish communities, the relationship of the State of Israel to the world, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Participants are encouraged to bring a Jewish-related object with which they have a family or emotional connection.
Rabbi Jonathan Kligler, a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, has been the spiritual leader of Kehillat Lev Shalem (the Congregation of a Full Heart) in Woodstock, New York since 1988. He is also a singer and guitarist, and has recorded several CDs of inspirational music. wjcshul.org
Rabbi Miriam Margles is the associate rabbi at Kehillat Lev Shalem. She is a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and holds a master's degree from Harvard Divinity School. Margles is cofounder of Encounter Programs, which engages American Jewish leaders in face-to-face encounters with Palestinians in the West Bank. |
