There is no single secret to being a writer. The writing process creates a different path for all who take it. But, all writers in every genre, accomplished or novice, can learn to ask the deeper questions that will open up their craft.

Deep writing naturally takes us to places of discomfort. Yet we can learn how to sit in the chair and be with ourselves long enough to hear our own words and write without judgment. Through learning to observe our thoughts, step outside ourselves to a place of witness consciousness, and move into our bodies, we learn how to stay with our characters and poems until we have heard all they have to say.

Laraine Herring helps us to utilize the wisdom in our own body and breath and access the deepest part of our writing by illuminating the key areas of distraction. We spend our class time generating new and authentic work, discussing, meditating, breathing, and being.

Required Reading: Herring, Writing Begins With the Breath. Recommended reading: Goldberg, Writing Down the Bones.

Laraine Herring, MFA, MA, holds a master of fine arts degree in creative writing and a master’s degree in counseling psychology. Her work has won the Barbara Deming Award for Women and has been nomi-nated for a Pushcart Prize. laraineherring.com
