For almost a decade, Byron Katie suffered from depression, rage, self-loathing, and constant thoughts of suicide. Then one morning in February 1986, she experienced a life-changing realization.

"In that instant of no-time," she says, "I discovered that when I believed my thoughts, I suffered, but that when I didn’t believe them, I didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Freedom is as simple as that. I found that suffering is optional. I found a joy within me that has never disappeared, not for a single moment. That joy is in everyone, always."

Katie woke with a process of self-inquiry that February morning in 1986 that she calls The Work. Eckhart Tolle, author of A New Earth, describes The Work as, "a razor-sharp sword that cuts through illusion and enables you to know for yourself the timeless essence of your being."

In this workshop, we learn how to put The Work to use in our own lives. It is an astonishingly simple process, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, and requires nothing more than a pen and paper, and an open mind. In The Work, we state a particular thought that is causing us stress and examine that thought by asking ourselves: "Is it true? Can we absolutely know that it’s true? How do we react when we believe that thought? Who would we be without that thought?" Through this process, anyone can learn to trace unhappiness to its source and eliminate it.

As Katie guides us through this simple yet powerful process of inquiry with humor and lovingly incisive clarity, stressful beliefs—about life, other people, and ourselves—radically shift and we discover that self-inquiry can bring us a happy life.

Since 1986, Byron Katie has brought The Work to hundreds of thousands of people around the world through events and workshops and at her School for The Work. She is the author of three best-selling books, Loving What Is (with Stephen Mitchell); I Need Your Love—Is That True? (with Michael Katz); and A Thousand Names for Joy (with Stephen Mitchell). Her latest book is Who Would You Be Without Your Story? thework.com
