Essential Skills of Yogic Meditation

Registration for this workshop has ended. Go to the Search Workshops page to look for upcoming workshops.

Have you practiced yoga but not yet explored the deeper levels of yogic meditation? According to the ancient meditative schools of Raja and Kriya Yoga, there are many levels of our being beyond the purely physical. In this workshop, master teacher Glenn Black guides us in an exploration of these levels of being through the primary practices of yogic meditation, including pranayama (complete yogic breath), yoga nidra (yogic sleep), chittakasha dharana (mind meditation), chankramanam (yogic roving or movement), and arohan and awarohan psychic passages.

Pranayama relaxes the body and prepares us for yoga nidra, a practice where we remain alert while our normal waking consciousness dissolves as in sleep. In chittakasha dharana, we use our mind’s ability to pull back from the things of this world to enter into a wider and deeper reality. With chankramanam, we awaken and stabilize awareness in normal activities like walking or eating. And, by learning to access arohan and awarohan psychic passages, we tap into our own psychic abilities.

Together these yogic meditation techniques form the essential foundation for the practice of Kriya Yoga, one of the most powerful methods for awakening kundalini, the evolutionary force.

One year of yoga or meditation experience required. Glenn Black is also teaching Advanced Yoga Immersion; May 7-14, and The Anatomy of Yoga; August 15-20, 2010.

Known in the yoga community as a master teacher, Glenn Black has an inspiring, no-nonsense style of teaching that comes from more than 30 years of intensive study of yoga, movement, and therapeutic bodywork. Black went to India in 1987 to study with B.K.S. Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar Yoga, and his son, Prashant Iyengar, and continues to integrate the therapeutic principles of Iyengar into his teaching. He is also a longtime student of the techniques of Kriya Yoga as taught by Swami Satyananda of India’s Bihar School. Like the legendary “forest yogis” of ancient times, Black has spent many years of intensive practice in solitude. He is also the only person certified by Shmuel Tatz, the creator of BodyTuning™, to teach this sophisticated system of bodywork. Black’s clients include many top music, sports, and business celebrities.
