The spirit of Sankofa is symbolized in West African culture by the mythical bird that flies forward with its head turned backwards, reflecting the belief that the wisdom of the past serves as a guide for building the future. This weekend, we honor ancestors from all cultures who came to America armed only with their sacred rhythms of drumming, dancing, storytelling, and singing, as we relax and explore a blend of Sacred Rhythm Yoga, ancestral traditions, and Eastern practices. Guided by yoga experts Jana Long and Maya Breuer, we practice yoga postures, breathing, and chants to jazz, Latin, and Afro-Cuban rhythms. We also explore mindful meditation for inner awareness to touch our eternal and true natures. Together, we dialogue, dance, and call upon our ancestors in the spirit of Sankofa to discover the sacred rhythms that connect our body, mind, and spirit. Jana Long, RYT, is the director of Power of One Yoga Center, a community based yoga studio serving the Baltimore, Maryland area.
