Transforming Chaos & Conflict

Strategies From the Art of War

Millions have read Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, the classic text on leadership and strategy, turning to it for advice on “winning without fighting” when alternatives fail. Yet, how many understand its profound teachings or know how to apply them in modern life—whether at home, in the workplace, or in our communities?

In this workshop, James Gimian and Barry Boyce present the core insights from their book, The Rules of Victory: How to Transform Chaos and Conflict—Strategies from the Art of War. Through lectures, experiential exercises, and question-and-answer sessions, we learn how to perceive the underlying dynamics of situations, and thus transform potential conflict into what The Art of War calls “victory.” This victory both achieves a winning outcome and renders further conflict unnecessary. The process is, they write, “possible through profound action that is often mysterious to those who witness it.” This workshop goes a long way to demystifying this process and includes:

  • In-depth explanations of the essential principles, strategies, and skills of
  • The Art of War
  • First-person success stories illustrating how these teachings can be applied to a wide variety of professional and personal challenges
  • Practices for ongoing study and effective application of the view and strategies from Sun Tzu’sThe Art of War

For more than 25 years, James Gimian and Barry Boyce have taught seminars, retreats, and leadership programs on how to effectively apply the strategies of The Art of War. They are members of the Denma Translation Group, which produced a critically acclaimed and best-selling translation of The Art of War. Gimian is the publisher of, and Boyce staff writer and senior editor at, Shambhala Sun magazine. shambhalasun.com
