A memoir is nothing less than the archive of your inner life-your effort to find meaning, to explain the past to another generation, to keep memory alive. But writing a successful memoir involves developing the skills to make your life experiences compelling to a reader.
Having worked with thousands of writers, Marge Piercy and Ira Wood have created a workshop dedicated to identifying the elements of the writer's craft and putting these techniques to use. Intended for experienced writers as well as beginners, the emphasis is on sharing our writing with others. Through short lectures and exercises, we concentrate on creating gripping beginnings, characters, and dialogue; writing about painful material without coming off as a victim; and narrative strategies for organizing our vast life experience.
Required reading: Piercy and Wood, So You Want To Write.
A major American writer, Marge Piercy is the author of 16 novels, 16 books of poetry, and her own highly acclaimed memoir, Sleeping With Cats. margepiercy.com
Ira Wood has authored three novels and is the publisher of Leapfrog Press, an independent publishing company. His work emphasizes autobiography, overcoming the inner censor, and the difficulties of writing about family. leapfrogpress.com |
