Registration for this workshop has ended. Go to the Search Workshops page to look for upcoming workshops.

The bodhisattva is the ultimate social and spiritual activist, the enlightened leader who dedicates all of his or her life and lifetimes to the highest good for the greatest number—transforming oneself, transforming the world. “We all rise and fall, sink or swim together. The altruistic bodhisattva code of Mahayana Buddhism is the highest spiritual ideal I know,” says Lama Surya Das. “And it is not as far away from us as we might think.”

In this retreat with Surya Das, one of the nation’s foremost Buddhist meditation masters, we learn the Buddhist’s 10 principles of enlightened living, known in Sanskrit as the “10 paramitas” (10 transcendental virtues). These virtues show us how to become the best self and truest noble being that we can be through this sacred path of awakening our innately good, warm heart and enlightened mind.

Through meditation, self-inquiry, discussions, chanting, and question-and-answer sessions, Surya Das shows us how to bring the bodhisattva’s ways of enlightened living into our daily life at home, at work, and in our communities. Beginners to meditation as well as longtime practitioners are invited.

“The bodhisattva code means to be a spiritual warrior, not a worrier,” Surya Das says. “We must become the wise elders we wish to see leading and guiding the world.”

Lama Surya Das is the author of several books, including Awakening the Buddha Within; Buddha Is As Buddha Does; Words of Wisdom; and The Big Questions. The spiritual director of the Dzogchen Center, he founded the Western Buddhist Teachers Network with the Dalai Lama (who refers to Surya Das as “The American Lama”). He has written the “Ask the Lama” column for Beliefnet.com for many years, and is active in interfaith dialogue and spiritual activism. surya.org
