The opening ceremony takes place on Omega’s Rhinebeck campus beginning at 3:00 P.M. on July 16th, 2009. A model of sustainable architecture, the OCSL is a pioneering project in the Living Building Challenge and is expected to be one of the first buildings in the United States to receive the Living Building designation in addition to receiving LEED Platinum certification. The core of the center is a 4,500-square-foot greenhouse containing a water treatment system, engineered by John Todd Ecological Design called an Eco-Machine™. This living system will use plants, bacteria, algae, snails, and fungi to recycle OCSL's wastewater (approximately 5 million gallons per year) into clean water that will restore the aquifer under the OCSL property. Speaking of the milestone, Dr. Todd's son and John Todd Ecological Design President, Jonathan Todd remarked, "We are honored to be a central part of this historic achievement, and I know my father is particularly happy and proud to see an Eco-Machine system of this scale in North America." Speaking of the value of the partnership between Omega and John Todd Ecological Design, Omega's Chief Executive Officer Skip Backus said, "John Todd Ecological Design brings a level of expertise on natural systems, which all green buildings should aspire to. We are honored to have partnered with them on creating the Omega Center for Sustainable Living, which models what is possible when we utilize cutting edge green technology to mimic Earth's natural processes."
