Beryl Bender Birch is the author of Power Yoga, the classic training manual for asana practice for Ashtanga Yoga; Beyond Power Yoga, which theorizes a relationship between the eight limbs of yoga and the chakras; and Boomer Yoga, which illustrates how to create a yoga plan that works for maturing adults.
Birch has been an avid student of yoga and the study of consciousness since 1971, and studied with Pattabhi Jois, founder of Ashtanga Yoga, from 1987 to 1990. With degrees in philosophy and comparative religion, she has traveled extensively in India and has been training yoga teachers as “spiritual revolutionaries” since 1980. In 2000, Beryl Bender Birch was named by Yoga Journal as one of only seven American women in their “Innovators Shaping Yoga Today” issue.
Birch teaches yoga throughout the world and is the director and founder of The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute in East Hampton, New York, and Vermont. She is also a founder of the Give Back Yoga Foundation, which provides yoga to underserved communities and offers developmental grants to yoga teachers for community service projects.
