Brené Brown


Brené Brown Brené Brown, PhD, is a member of the research faculty at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Her primary research focuses on how shame and empathy impact our ability to develop meaningful relationships. She recently finished a six-year qualitative study on shame and its impact on women. Her current research focuses on men and shame and the ways in which shame and empathy are used in parenting, education and the workplace. She has also developed, and is currently field-testing, a psycho-educational curriculum based on her theory of shame resilience.

Dr. Brown holds bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in social work and is a licensed social worker. She teaches graduate courses on women’s issues, shame and empathy, advocacy-based research, and global justice. She has won numerous teaching awards including the college's Outstanding Faculty Award. In addition to teaching, she is involved in community education, especially work centering on domestic violence prevention, media awareness, and women and addiction. Dr. Brown was recently appointed to the working board of the Nobel Women's Initiative (NWI). NWI's mission is to address and prevent the root causes of violence against women by spotlighting and promoting the efforts of women’s rights activists, researchers, and organizations working to advance peace with justice and equality.

Dr. Brown is co-editor of the book Controversial Issues in Social Policy and author of I Thought It Was Just Me: Women Reclaiming Power and Courage in a Culture of Shame.
