Yang Yang, PhD

Yang Yang, PhD, is a master practitioner and instructor within the traditional taiji and qigong community, and a researcher interested in applying the highest standards of Western science to evaluate the mechanisms and benefits of mind-body exercise.

Yang Yang was chronically weak from a congenital heart defect as a young boy, and doctors said he wouldn’t survive without surgery. He began to practice taiji as the only feasible treatment to heal his heart. After devoted practice restored his health, he attended university, won collegiate martial arts championships, and studied closely and privately with several of the 18th generation grandmasters of the Chen family style of taiji.

To understand the power and mechanics of taiji and qigong beyond traditional frameworks, Yang Yang completed a doctorate degree in kinesiology at the University of Illinois, where he remains as an adjunct faculty. His research focuses directly on the mechanisms and benefits of traditional taiji and qigong. Yang’s detailed study of taiji and qigong as a master practitioner and as a scientific researcher allowed him to distill the essence of various aspects of traditional taiji training into an evidence-based program suitable for people of all ages and physical abilities.

Yang Yang is author of Taijiquan: The Art of Nurturing, The Science of Power, and director of the Center for Taiji and Qigong Studies in New York, New York, and Champaign, Illinois. He is also a sought-after lecturer and has presented at the National Institutes of Health and the Mayo Clinic.
