Insight Meditation (B3C)

Breathing With Life

Matthew Daniell
Birch
Track: Meditation
Level: Beginner

Yoga practitioners often develop a wonderful sensitivity to energy and sensation in the body. By adding meditation to your practice, you can also develop a heightened sensitivity to the mind. Guided by Matthew Daniell, you learn the Buddha's meditation instructions on breath awareness—"breathing with life"— to systematically develop a present moment attention that looks into the mind-body process. As the practice of clear seeing unfolds, you learn to let go of suffering, and enter into your life more fully, with an open heart, freshness, and ease.

Matthew Daniell is the guiding teacher at the Insight Meditation Center in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and a member of the religious services department at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he leads meditation groups for students and faculty. He also studied yoga in the tradition of T.K.V. Desikachar and is certified to teach in several traditions. imcnewburyport.com

Yoga & the Heart-Mind (C5F)

Living in the Inner City

Gary Kraftsow
Sanctuary
Track: Meditation
Level: General

The ancient etymology of "purusa," the Sankhya and yoga term for our true or essential self, is the "city dweller." Much of yoga therapy works on the "suburbs," structural and physiological conditions and their symptoms. Yet, the deeper sources of suffering are often rooted in the "inner city" of our thoughts, moods, and behavioral patterns. We discuss the theory and practice of journeying through the suburbs in order to heal our inner city, followed by a practice that integrates asana, pranayama, chanting, mantra, and meditation.

Gary Kraftsow began his study of yoga in India with T.K.V. Desikachar in 1974 and founded the American Viniyoga Institute in 1999. As one of the foremost yoga therapists in the United States, Kraftsow has consulted on many research and collaborative projects, notably a National Institutes of Health study on yoga for back pain and a Harvard Medical School study for generalized anxiety. viniyoga.com
