Cultivate the cognitive and emotional skills you need to improve well-being and reach your highest aspirations with Dr. Eric Loucks, author of The Mindful College Student.

Learn the practical steps you can take to foster well-being, performance and happiness with Dr. Eric Loucks, author of The Mindful College Student.

College is a time of transition. It's a time for preparing to make your own way in the world. But if you're like many teens and young adults, the thought of leaving home and being on your own can also be intimidating. That’s why you need a solid foundation to help you manage stress, stay focused, and maintain healthy habits—in body, mind, and spirit.

In this self-paced course with Dr. Eric Loucks, as a companion to his book The Mindful College Student, young adults (in school or not) learn the science of mindfulness and practical steps needed to foster well-being, performance, happiness, and thriving in themselves and others.

Dr. Loucks addresses mindfulness from a physical and emotional point of view, providing tools to help you open your body—physical thriving—and your heart—emotional thriving. Many of the techniques introduced in the course are drawn from Dr. Loucks’s book The Mindful College Student, and informed by his popular Mindfulness-Based College (MBC) program, which he teaches at Brown University and to other young adults throughout the United States.

You'll learn positive coping strategies for dealing with stress—including diet, fitness, and sleep habits. Most importantly, you’ll discover three core self-regulation skills to help steer you toward the life you want: self-awareness, attention control, and emotion regulation.

At Brown University, Dr. Loucks has seen young adults in his courses form groups of friends (i.e. crews), as they find others who have a similar desire to thrive. Would you like to thrive? Find your "crew" through the course’s online forums and live sessions, as you embark on your mindfulness journey.

Although geared toward issues facing a growing percentage of young adults, the methods used in this program can apply to anyone.

Is This a Good Time to Engage in Mindfulness and Meditation Practices?

Meditation involves coming closer to our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. This can sometimes be uncomfortable. If you have a psychiatric challenge, such as trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosis, depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder, this may be a difficult time to engage in learning mindfulness and meditation. There is evidence supporting that mindfulness trainings can help with all of these health challenges, but sometimes in a particular adapted way for the specific condition (see Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness: Practices for Safe and Transformative Healing by David A. Treleaven). You might like to talk with your doctor or mental health provider to see if now is a good time to engage in mindfulness and meditation training, and if so, if they have recommendations.

While the Omega Institute and Dr. Loucks have used their best efforts in preparing this online program to provide accurate information in regard to the subject matter covered, the advice and practices contained in it may not be suitable for your situation. You should consult with a professional where appropriate.

Research: Mindfulness-Based College: A Stage 1 Randomized Controlled Trial for University Student Well-Being

Thanks in part to Dr. Loucks's research, science has shown that mindfulness can be used to care for some of the biggest challenges of our times: loneliness, sadness, stress, obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, addiction, digital media distractions, and even a general disconnect with the people around us.
